This is a tried and true direct x 10 320 streaming processor smart/ low power consumption card (75 Watts max) from ati. It's had a few years for all the bugs to surface and be dealt with so it's a safe bet to install with the latest drivers from the ati website. I bought 2 of these and they both work fantastic! They went into an HP a6857c desktop computer. The original is now the spare and that one was running for over a month and even survived an open case 3 foot computer drop onto a fairly hard carpeted surface. I originally installed the drivers using the VGA connection so there would be no conflict with my onboard sound. I then swithced over to the HDMI connection and that operation went flawlessly. Knowing what I know now I would have downloaded the drivers and the CCC first, uninstalled my accelerated integrated graphic drivers second, put the card in and then installed the drivers and ccc I had already downloaded. That way the card won't be spinning it's wheels waiting an inordinate amount of time for it's drivers. I could have gotten by on the stock 300 Watt Power Supply with this card but installed a Corsair 400 Watt psu anyway. These are dream cards with smart power consumption and no external power connection. That means my computer is only drawing 66.3 Watts as I type this but when I play Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2008 the power consumption goes up to 120 Watts. It's similar for Deer Drive. You don't get that with the old style external plug in graphic cards. They would cause your computer to use significant more power at all times ! This card has something like 300 5 star reviews on Newegg so it's the nearest thing to a sure bet you're gonna get for a graphics card. When you try to print the HIS rebate form make sure you match up the upc code to the model code because it seems each model has more than one upc code and if you get it wrong the form will not print but it won't tell you why. I thought there was something wrong with my printer until I finally figured it out. You'll get an option for a 1 week rebate but it will cost you 10%. Rebates twenty dollars and more are issued on debit cards but the 10 dollar rebate is a check issue and 8-10 weeks out if you don't take the instant option. Oh yeah the fan on this thing requires an adjacent open slot because it exhausts out the back of your case. For all but hard core gamers with gaming rigs(usually high wattage) this card is the perfect solution. It rates 5.7 on the Windows Vista Experience Index.
Review By Patrick J.Laske ( Milwaukee, WI ) :
I bought this card based on the other 5 star recommendations and it's cost. I installed it in a new PC I built that has a FOXCONN A74ML-K 3.0
motherboard and Windows 7 64-bit for the OS. The motherboard has Integrated ATI® Radeon(tm) 2100 graphics and 5.1 channel HD Audio. I thought that since this card also has Radeon Graphics and ATI drivers that my chances of having everything work together were pretty good. First off, Windows 7 is not listed as a supported OS on the box System Requirements list. However, there is a Windows 7 64-bit compatible universal driver on the ATI Catalyst support website (released 12/13/2010). I installed this driver. The graphics seems to work well, although I'm not a big gamer. "Then why did you buy this card", you ask? Because I wanted an HDMI output that did not come with the mainboard (it was an afterthought requirement). And this leads me to my problem. Although the graphics works fine the sound does not come through on the HDMI port. There are all sorts of people with this problem with ATI related cards. I've tried all the supposed "fixes" and nothing has worked so far. So I really could have accomplished what I have with a DVI to an HDMI converter. But I have to say that the Windows experience score for graphics and gaming on the PC went from 3.7 and 3.4 to 6.7 for both. So, if that's what you need it seems to be a good card, but if you want sound through the HDMI port than look somewhere else.
Update - I found the driver necessary for this to work including the sound through HDMI. Therefore, I'm changing my review rating. I could go to 4 stars because it was a hassle finding the right driver. However, I'm rating this 5 stars because now that it is working, it works great! BTW if you find yourself in the same situation the driver that I used is the one on the
ATI Radeon site
(AMD) called "AMD Catalyst(tm) Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) Technology Edition" issued 12/13/2010 with a size of 88.9 MB.
